How to display a book nook: shelf ideas, dust and where the light falls

A finished book nook is designed to be seen end-on, at roughly eye level, through a gap in a row of books. Get those three things right and almost any shelf works. Here is what we have learned from the shelves in our own office.

Which shelf

Eye level when you are sitting is best: on a living-room bookcase that usually means the second or third shelf up. Nooks are 15–25 cm tall, so check the shelf height, and remember the battery box may need a hand's width of clearance behind.

Avoid the shelf above a radiator or in direct afternoon sun. Heat does nothing to the wood but sunlight fades printed paper.

What goes either side

Hardbacks with plain spines frame a nook better than busy paperbacks. Pull a few books forward so the nook sits a little back from the front edge; the recess makes the scene feel deeper. If the world has a theme, let the books hint at it: dark fantasy paperbacks around Spire of the Wyrm, cookery books beside Warmglow Coffee.

Light

The nook's own LEDs do the work, but the room matters. A nook glows best in a room lit warmly and slightly dimly; under a cool overhead light the effect is lost. If you have a lamp near the bookcase, angle it away from the nook so the interior light reads clearly.

Dust

Dust is the enemy of miniatures. A soft make-up brush or a photographer's blower every couple of weeks keeps it off; cloths catch on railings and lanterns. Nooks with an open front can be given a clear acrylic sheet cut to size, but most builders find a brush is enough.

Building a collection

Two or three nooks on the same bookcase read as a deliberate collection; one on every shelf reads as clutter. Space them, keep them at similar heights, and vary the worlds — a shop, a library, a garden — rather than repeating a type. Our collections are grouped by world for exactly this reason: Libraries & Bookshops, Shops & Cafés, Cottages & Gardens, Fantasy & Gothic.

Moving house

Wrap each nook in a tea towel, stand it upright in a box with the front facing in, and take the batteries out. They travel better than you would expect.
