Under a row of five tall arched windows, a two-storey library glows amber. Upstairs, a gallery runs round three sides behind wooden railings, with red-cushioned benches, a burgundy chest of drawers and a wall of small framed portraits. Below, a teal WELCOME sign and a pendant lamp in a gold petal shade hang over a tiled floor crowded with bookcases, stacked hardbacks, a writing table and a brick fireplace glowing under the stairs.

An intermediate build of around ten to twenty hours, best spread over several evenings. Most of that time goes on the small work: folding the miniature books, fitting the gallery railings and the dog-leg staircase, then furnishing both floors. The warm-white LEDs go in last, and once connected, the pendant, the fireplace and the gallery lamps light the room from within.

For anyone who keeps more books than shelf space, reads by lamplight or wants a slow project, and a good gift for readers who would rather have a proper build than a finished ornament. It is a room box, not a book nook: open at the front and top, it sits on a desk, shelf or side table like a single room from a doll's house.

Pre-cut laser-cut sheets, plus printed papers, miniature furniture and an LED light set, with step-by-step instructions in a full-colour manual.

How long does it take to build?

Most people finish it in 10–20 hours at an unhurried pace. We rate it intermediate: fine for a careful first-timer with steady hands.

How big is it when finished?

About 23 × 18 × 24 cm (width × depth × height). It stands on its own, for a desk, windowsill or shelf.

Does it light up, and are batteries included?

Yes: Warm-white LED, runs on 2 × CR2032 coin cells. Batteries aren't included, so have some ready for the moment you finish.

What else do I need to build it?

Batteries for the LED light (2 × CR2032 3V coin cells), which aren't in the box. In the box: the illustrated manual. A craft knife or fine sandpaper helps tidy edges.

Who is it suitable for?
