Three storeys of a natural history gallery, lit from inside. Downstairs, a long-tailed dinosaur skeleton rears over ferns, a plinth-mounted fossil, a small horned creature and a placard. Twin wooden staircases climb past cabinets, framed prints and a green habitat case to an arched arcade holding a mounted skull and suspended skeleton. Under the roof, a carved plaque: Fossil Museum.

At 316 pieces, a great deal is packed into a small footprint, and nearly all of it stays on view. Pre-cut 2.5 mm MDF floors, arches, balustrades and staircases build in layers; then the exhibits go in, piece by piece, with tweezers. The LED set, threaded through three floors, comes last: the arcades glow like a gallery after hours. Allow six to eight hours.

For the fossil-minded: anyone who lingers in natural history halls, likes skeletons and specimen cases, or simply enjoys a very detailed build. It gives well to teenagers, science teachers and patient adults.

How long does it take to build?

Most people finish it in 6–8 hours at an unhurried pace. We rate it intermediate: fine for a careful first-timer with steady hands.

How big is it when finished?

About 16.6 × 11.6 × 21 cm (width × depth × height). It stands upright between the books on a shelf, like a hardback.

Does it light up, and are batteries included?

Yes: Warm-white LED with crystal chandelier, touch switch. Batteries aren't included, so have some ready for the moment you finish.

What else do I need to build it?

Batteries for the LED light, which aren't in the box. You'll also need craft glue, which isn't in the box. In the box: tweezers and a frosted sanding rod, and the illustrated manual. A craft knife or fine sandpaper helps tidy edges.

Who is it suitable for?
