What Is a MOC? Compatible Building Sets Explained

If you have spent any time in the building-block hobby, you will have seen the term MOC — on forums, on marketplaces, and across our own site. Here is what it actually means, and why MOC and compatible sets have become the fastest-growing corner of the hobby.

MOC stands for “My Own Creation”

The term comes from the adult builder community. A MOC is any model designed outside the official big-brand ranges — originally one-off custom builds shared by hobbyists, and now a whole category of professionally produced sets. The MOC world is where some of the most ambitious models exist: sets like our 9,090-piece RMS Titanic simply have no equivalent in mainstream ranges at anywhere near the price.

How do compatible bricks work?

Building bricks are built on a standard interlocking stud system whose original patents expired decades ago. That means specialist manufacturers can legally produce bricks with the same dimensions and clutch — which is why our sets clip together perfectly with LEGO® and other major brands you already own. (We are not affiliated with the LEGO Group — see our Brand Disclaimer.)

Quality varies between manufacturers, which is why we are selective. The sets we stock use high-quality ABS plastic — the same material as branded bricks — with precise moulding, strong clutch and full step-by-step instructions.

Why are they so much cheaper?

Three reasons, none of them about quality: you are not paying for a global brand's licensing and marketing costs; packaging is functional rather than collector-grade; and we source directly from the factories rather than through layers of distribution. The result is a display-worthy build at a fraction of the collector price — which is the whole reason BuildMOC exists.

What to expect from a BuildMOC set

Every set arrives boxed with all pieces in grouped or numbered bags, full instructions (printed or digital), and free tracked UK delivery. If a piece is ever missing, we replace it free — no need to return anything.
