Push open the gates and the countess is already waiting by her throne

A grey stone gatehouse, iron gates swung open. Spires and finials crown the slate-roofed gable; briars and red roses climb the stone under an arch of bats. Inside, the vampire's throne room: a high-backed throne with a silver cross, wine-red velvet curtains at pointed windows, a countess in black. A raven on a tombstone, a skeleton by a lit candelabra.

An intermediate build: 210 pieces, three to four hours. Brick side walls and slate roof form the shell. Then comes the two-leaf gate, its ironwork, briars and roses cut as separate fretwork layers, followed by the throne, curtains and graveyard props. Touch the switch and the light does the rest: warm red through the throne room, cold green low across the headstones.

For anyone who likes their shelves a little haunted: horror readers, Halloween decorators and model makers who enjoy fine fretwork. A striking birthday or Christmas present, and best slotted between two hardbacks with the lights on.

How long does it take to build?

Most people finish it in 3–4 hours at an unhurried pace. We rate it intermediate: fine for a careful first-timer with steady hands.

How big is it when finished?

About 15.3 × 11.3 × 21 cm (width × depth × height). It stands upright between the books on a shelf, like a hardback.

Does it light up, and are batteries included?

Yes: Two-tone LED (red and green), touch switch. Batteries aren't included, so have some ready for the moment you finish.

What else do I need to build it?

Batteries for the LED light, which aren't in the box. You'll also need craft glue, which isn't in the box. In the box: tweezers and a frosted sanding rod, and the illustrated manual. A craft knife or fine sandpaper helps tidy edges.
