The Lit Interior

Switch the lights on and the whole counter glitters like closing time at a jeweller's.

A free-standing jewellery shop in cream, ivory and gold. An arched, lamplit sign crowns the open front, a lace pelmet for its awning. Up a little porch: a glazed corner door, black scrollwork ironmongery, OPEN plaque, welcome mat. Inside, necklace busts and ring stands on a wooden counter, an oval-mirrored dressing table, yellow roses in a basket by the till.

An advanced build: 428 pieces to cut free, fold, glue and place over five to seven hours. Raise the shell, then fit out the shop as a jeweller would, counters and shelving first, then papered walls and framed prints. Last, with tweezers, the tiny stock: open boxes spilling chains and brooches, perfume bottles, hatboxes, a gilt telephone. Warm LEDs thread through as you go.

For patient builders who love fine detail; a gift for anyone fond of miniatures, jewellery or both. At 21.7 × 16.9 × 16.7 cm it stands on a desk, sideboard or cabinet: a warm shopfront that switches on at dusk.

Does it light up, and are batteries included?

Yes: Warm-white LED, rocker switch. Batteries aren't included, so have some ready for the moment you finish.

What else do I need to build it?

Batteries for the LED light (2 × AAA), which aren't in the box. In the box: the illustrated manual. A craft knife or fine sandpaper helps tidy edges.

Who is it suitable for?
